Figs trees date back centuries. They are one of the oldest fruits that we still have available today. They are great eaten fresh, made into preserves, or dried. Fig trees are among the easiest of the fruit trees that can be grown. They grow happily in either the ground or containers, making them the perfect project for all types of gardeners. Fig tree fruit can be harvested multiple times towards the end of summer, specifically July and August. They are commonly sun dried and may be eaten year round. Fig trees are self-fruitful, so you only need to plant one to get fruit. If you want more than one - and what fig lover doesn't - space them at least ten feet apart. A fig tree can grow 15 feet high and ten feet wide. Or bigger! They can be kept much smaller with pruning if space is an issue. The most important thing when growing fig trees is proper siting. Fig trees need full sun to grow strong. Without enough light, they become weak and unhealthy. Growing Tips: Fig trees grow best in well-drained soil. Plant them in the full sun. In colder areas, plant your fig trees on the south side of a building to provide winter protection. Fig trees like a pH level of 5.5 to 6.5. When temperatures drop below 15 degrees, cover your fig trees with a blanket to provide more winter protection. You can prune figs into a tree or large shrub. They bear fruit in 3 years. Plant your fig trees 15’ to 20’ apart. Water fig trees throughout the summer and fertilize as needed. Mulching is recommended. Fig tree fruit yield 1 to 2 bushels per fig tree.
